Navigating the Technology Tsunami: Archive and Chat Transcript from TLT Group's FridayLive! #TLTGFrLv 20120316

Presenters:  Jane Harris and Pamela Howe, University of North Carolina at Greensboro
Friday, March 16, 2:00pm Eastern

* We apologize for the unfortunate coincidence of the anniversary of the Japanese Tsunami and the title of this presentation.*  Many experts believe that technology is influencing the ways we seek information, engage with with others, and learn. If so, how does this affect our teaching and learning practices?  What changes might make sense?
Our thesis is that our technologies reflect and align with the ways we engage with others and learn.  Thus, understanding learning sciences research can help us use technology to enhance our practice.  We will share examples from the research and a variety of available multimedia learning environments .  Attendees will engage in discussions about potential strategies and challenges.
Access to the presentation Google Site will be provided.

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: Welcome to: Navigating the Technology Tsunami     Presenters:  Jane Harris and Pamela Howe, University of North Carolina at GreensboroFriday, March 16, 2012, 2:00 pm (ET)

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: '...one of the most memorable [film documentaries] this year, winner of a jury prize as well as an Oscar nomination, is Lucy Walker's unforgettable "The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom," a look at the aftermath of the 2011 Japanese disaster that emphasizes the way "beauty and terror always exist in nature."'- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times  http://www.thetsunamiandthecherryblossom.com/

Pam Howe: hi everyone I'm so excited to be here

Jose Lepervanche: ...and now we have to add tablets too. :-)

Pam Howe: yes Jose

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: I've begun using FlipBoard on iPad as the most pleasant and effective way to view lots of news sources daily IN ADDIITION TO READING NEWSPAPEERS magazines, books, ...

Olena Zhadko: I use it it too :)

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (and let us know if you still can't hear anyone very well - it helps us to know :) )

Pam Howe: yes FlipBoard is great

Jim Julius: There is an advantage re "quality" in that I am much more likely to find viewpoints outside of mainstream media through links friends provide. Still takes a lot of critical thought to evaluate - but we should be applying that critical thought to MSM, too.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: ? any deeper data about similarities/differences among tech usage of "traditional" age undergards vs. growing cohort of older students?

Jose Lepervanche: Some older students feel evoverloaded with too much technologies in online classrooms.

Jose Lepervanche: They don't goo to Google Scholar.

Olena Zhadko: some do :)

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: Jim - Thnx for the update.

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: @Elaine - yes, we can assume economic-related, also minorities.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Who chooses the background music for the videos for this group?

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: I'm fascinated by new options and pressures to deal with extensions of old issues vis a vis identity, authenticity, reality, ... self-representation, privacy, ...

Jose Lepervanche: We use Glo-Bus.com simulation for business decision practices.

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: And Creative Commons gives us a way to know how much remixing is OK (from the originator's perspective)

Eugenia McAllister: You mentioned "a" program ???  will the link be available?

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: JoseL - can you tell us a little about Glo-Bus.com?  what features do you find esp. useful?  difficult?

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: I'm sure my wife hopes that I don't do anything to extend my brain.

Jose Lepervanche: www.glo-bus.com gives all info. We like the content, rounds, and strategic management focus.

Jose Lepervanche: Easy and useful in the Capstone in Supervision and Management.

Ilene Frank: "Judgement" or "evaluation"  - good concept for us information literacy librarians

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Tnx @JoseL

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: Google Site for this presentation: https://sites.google.com/a/uncg.edu/navigating-the-technology-tsunami/

Irina IVliyeva: information applyiance - spot on ! Live this ezpression!

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: We heard in an excellent online session earlier this week about collab of librarians and faculty and students about how students at more research-oriented universities are MORE likely to be using wikipedia than students at other colleges!

Jose Lepervanche: We are researching about LMS from computers to smartphones.
 ------------------------------- (03/16/2012 14:38) -------------------------------
Betsy Tighe: Please clarify the question:  new to our awareness, new our our practice???

Eugenia McAllister: Yes thank you

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: remind me what distributed cognition means?

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: thanks

Jim Julius: Many of the literacies I don't think are "changing" with new media, but new media helps reframe and better understand those literacies.

Jose Lepervanche: reconnected?

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: more media

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: @Jim - great point!

lorraine: new as a means of teaching to students

lorraine: or what Jim said

Mitchell Shuldman: If i understand correctly, the ability to know how to take content and distribuyte across multiple platforms I think is very importnat.

Jim Julius: I think it's about how much easier it is to remix

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: It is the way new medias augment and allow for interaction that deepens the literacies.

lorraine: and understanding of copyright type stuff

lorraine: creative commons

lorraine: play, having fun with students using media

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: Play high on both polls

lorraine: fun, media and then pedagogy

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: I had a little trouble moving from trying to digest/ingest these categories to trying to respond to the poll.  I'm still catching up.  But I'm at the older end of the spectrum.

Eugenia McAllister 2: Transmedia Navigation and e-Journalism ...any connections?

Elaine Garofoli: talking about multitasking, I was tweeting this session, and a tweet passed me by

Mitchell Shuldman: when it comes to media production play is work, as well.  These projects are often time consuming

lorraine: how do we have fun and teach as well - speaking as an instructor

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Tnx Pam!

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: I think having play be high in both is a really good sign!

Elaine Garofoli: about plagiarism being NOT a technology problem but a behavorial one

Chamblis Broman: transmedia navigation used as a way for students to contribute to the changing story across media.

Swells@capilanou.ca: giving students time to play with media, as opposed to just getting through content.

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: @ Eugenia - interesting observation... I think likely so.

Mitchell Shuldman: I would also just add:

lorraine: playing with media in order to......

Elaine Garofoli: it stirkes me that WITHOUT manyof these new media literacies

Mitchell Shuldman: I have always been interested in beginning to understand what it is that students learn through the creation of new media technologies.  I have been convincing faculty to adopt media production projects for the past 7 years. One of my colleagues and I began to look into the kinds of learning taking place vis-à-vis media and information literacy along with what others have called 21st Century Skills.  Time management, taking leadership in group projects, etcShuldman, Mitch and Tajik, Mansoureh (2010) The role of video/media production innon-media disciplines: the case of health promotion. Learning, Media and Technology, 35:3, 357-362• Tajik, Mansoureh, Shuldman, Mitchell, and Garlo, Elizabeth. (2011). EngagedEducation Through Integrated Service Learning Video Production. In Proceedings ofINTED 2011 (International Technology, Education and Development Conference)

Elaine Garofoli: plagiarism will continue to be ion the rise

Patricia Morgenstern: Playing with the media can help with retention of the information.

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: @mitchell can you send me links?  sallygilbert@tltgroup.org

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: @ Elaine - as is the importance of teaching citations and different levels of citation.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: @Elaine -  might plagiarism be a useful "presenting problem" to focus more interest in this set of issues/categories among faculty?

Mitchell Shuldman: Great.  That's exatly what I do here at UMass Lowell as well.  It is amazing how quickly studnets and faculty are adopting these new academic projects.

Elaine Garofoli: @bonnie yes, like citing a tweet

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: & like citing at different levels (aka Creative Commons - did I use directly or make it my own?)

Jim Julius: the sharing/remix aspect of participatory culture questions the whole construct of plagiarism ... so bringing that into academia raises sticky issues!

Vonda Henderson: Playing with the technology helps to figure out how it works for me!
 ------------------------------- (03/16/2012 14:47) -------------------------------
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: I'd say this is Jane & Pam's transition to their next points in their planned presentation.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Sure!

Chamblis Broman: use adobe connect format in online teaching (including chat, polls, etc) and teacher models behavior connected with literacies.

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: thank you

Chamblis Broman: Being a creator vs. consumer is important and not sure where it fits or if it's missing from list of literacies

Patricia Hauslein: I'm mostly concerned about the lose or lack of development of emotional intellegence.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: @Chamblis - THANSK!    I hadn't noticed how well this session is modeling some of the ideas our presenters are addressing!  I always hope we can "walk the walk" too!

Jose Lepervanche: My son, an electrical engineering student, enrolled in circuits @ MITx  videos and labas are cool.

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: @Patricia - do you mean because we are at a distance?

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: @Patricia thanks for bringing this up

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: How are these not "lectures"?

Chamblis Broman: Jose - what is circuits@MIT?

Elaine Garofoli: @Steve who says they are not?

Chamblis Broman: Not a lecture because he's not presenting he's thinking it through aloud

Jim Julius: They are mini-lectures, absolutely

Pam Howe: steve i think you will see in a min.

Jose Lepervanche: Go to MIT.edu and search for MITx courses. The first one is Circuits that started last 3/5

Elaine Garofoli: I don't find anything wrong with "mini-lectures"

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: Jose - we are going to get to this - thnx for mentioning?

Elaine Garofoli: I think didactic education still has a place

Jim Julius: There is nothing inherently wrong with lectures or mini-lectures.

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: @ Steve - these are lecturettes w/ visuals.  They are eclips and accessible as Just-In-Time instruction... they have a "reveal" thinking aspect to them.

Jose Lepervanche: I use small videos to share stories in my classes. however, I do not lecture. www.drjosechannel.com

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: Jose - what discipline?

Jim Julius: The ability to review/revisit with recorded lectures is clearly appreciated by many.

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: and I think he is speaking to the next level of what these do AND how to use them to facilitate learning (with their assessment overlay and module structure (the newer level) that's being shared here.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: He is most definitely NOT sitting next to each or any of us.  There's nothing wrong with what he's doing, but it bothers me a lot that some descriptions of it are seriously distorting what is going on in Khan's services as well as what happens in "regular" classrooms

Jose Lepervanche: Management, Information Systems. they are just tailored to my online courses to expand my hybrid on-land classes.

Jim Julius: Question is whether the understanding gained through these is deep and transferrable.

Jim Julius: Or simply algorithmic.

Elaine Garofoli:  @Jim ah yes!

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: @Jim right on!

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: No, i'm playing SteveG's advocate

Elaine Garofoli: by themselves I do not think they necessarily are

Cari: My 7 year-old was struggling with multiple digit subraction. Rather than have mom tell her how to do it, I presented the option of watching a Khan academy presentation. He walked through the problems multiple times. It really did feel like he was helping her walk through her thinking. She loved it!

Jose Lepervanche: MITx link isin the slide.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Is the real point that lots of people prefer to learn or learn better when using this particular kind of videos rather than portions of textbooks?

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: Next - out to the Google Site for this presentation: https://sites.google.com/a/uncg.edu/navigating-the-technology-tsunami/

Ilene Frank: It seems to me that Khan Academy the stuff is well-done - but not different. What's good is that the stuff is free and accessible!  It's not behind a paywall.
 ------------------------------- (03/16/2012 14:57) -------------------------------
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: You will find that it looks much more elegant when you visit the site on your own.

Eric Werth: I have used Khan in a few of my classes with good response.  I also know those who have an experience like Cari.  I have used them to brush up on a topic myself.  Sometimes it is hearing someone explain something different that helps me (or others) put things together.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: The not-addressed key issue is the ways in which the Khan acad. resources and those others on the list are used by whom for what purpsoes - and what kinds of guidance and support , especially

Jim Julius: and in what context ... is it an end, or a means toward an end that involves more complex problem-solving and application of the skills

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: Yes we are Jane - TechBurst

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: http://c21u.gatech.edu/techburst

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: BUT in the case of the TechBurst competition, I'l bet a lot that the students who MAKE these videos make even greater learning gains on these topics than almost anyone else!

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Which is NOT to say that the recipients of the videos don't gain something too!

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: there's some contradiction I'm not quite grasping about forming a library of presentations and having students using them VS creating knowledge

Mitchell Shuldman: I would agree - keeping in mind that the primary learner would be the student making the video.

Pam Howe: i agree Steve. tech in the hands of students!

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: Let's ask Jane and Pam to come back, please!

Jim Julius: Open

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: MOOC - www.mooc.ca

Pam Howe: i believe OPEN

Pam Howe: welcome

deb williams: Jose: we should do this compatition at FSCJ

Janice Dukes: Thank you

Elaine Garofoli: hadn't seen them in a compiled in a list

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: !

Kim Distel: Thank you

Peg S: Excellent, thank you so much!

Elaine Garofoli: exactly!

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: @ Betsy - you will access the chat at www.tlt.gs/tltswg ?

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: yes.   chat transcript will be avail via http://tlt.gs/tltswg

Jose Lepervanche: Yes, again some students feel overloaded by adding too much media and options.

James Lurvey: No one technique will work for everyone, you have to have a variety.

Elaine Garofoli: how will it ever be possible to teach our teachers how to use the ever changing technology?

Vonda Henderson: Will we receive a certificate for this presentation?

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: @Vonda - ;-)

Eric Werth: The best use of technology comes when someone identifies an area that they would like to improve and find a technology to assist.  For example, what technology can be used to help improve student-faculty communication outside of the classroom?  I do not suggest that technology be integrated just for the sake of throwing something new in.

Elaine Garofoli: oh wait, let me guess...we start with LTA :-)

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: I haven't yet seen evidence taht application of learnings from cognitive sciences improve education in courses

Eugenia McAllister 2: Please give the Knight Foundation

Jose Lepervanche: Good point Eric.

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: @Eric - well said.

Pam Howe: great Eric

Jose Lepervanche: I tried to use Second Life as other were using it but it was not useful nor easy to use for business students.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: However, I certainly advocate the efforts to interpret and apply findings from the learning sciences to teaching/learning in coursese

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: Knight http://www.knightfoundation.org/media/uploads/article_pdfs/Future-of-the-First-Amendment-2011-full.pdf

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: for Eugenia

Eugenia McAllister 2: Thanks JAne

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: yeah

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: Jose - we agree - learning curve steep

Pam Howe: I think one of the cool things is that Kahn is actually so simple

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: elaine's hand is raised

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: I want to get to the emotional intelligence issue Patricia H brought up

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: Jane  - Screen share it up for you now to show your other items you hoped to share today.

Peg S: Would any of you be willing to mentor me in my research of NML for my dissertation?

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: We hear you Elaine

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: thnx Bonnie

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: Elaine - yes - that's what the research says about adoption of tech in academe

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: @E;laine - yup, see, from 1996, "Making the Most of a Slow Revolution" by me - http://www.eric.ed.gov/ERICWebPortal/search/detailmini.jsp?_nfpb=true&_&ERICExtSearch_SearchValue_0=EJ521745&ERICExtSearch_SearchType_0=no&accno=EJ521745

Elaine Garofoli: yes

Elaine Garofoli: not on the vanguard at all

Elaine Garofoli: in fact that would be faily entithetical

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: @PegS - say a little more about your dissertation

Elaine Garofoli: it already is fascinating

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: @Jane -  sure, we need to deal more carefully, widely with all those gates and all those Gates

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: The archive recording link for today's session is: http://connectpro86502729.adobeconnect.com/p31xbnlk4y9/  (available after we close this session today).

Elaine Garofoli: aberlour - I thought that wasa a Scotch

Peg S: I hope to conduct a case study approach of various classes, interviewing students about their mobile technology and social media usage.

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: Links, refs, recording for this session avail at http://tlt.gs/tltswg

Patricia Hauslein: Unfortunately I don't have a mic
 ------------------------------- (03/16/2012 15:16) -------------------------------
Jose Lepervanche: Iried to expand to use technologies outside the classroom and then reverse to bring the technoloiges to Blackboard.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: @Pam recommendations:   Jenkins - Media Ed for 21st Century

Patricia Hauslein: It seems that we don't give students the opportunity to be quiet with each other to actually know others on an emotional level and not just as a "friend".

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: http://digitallearning.macfound.org/atf/cf/%7B7E45C7E0-A3E0-4B89-AC9C-E807E1B0AE4E%7D/JENKINS_WHITE_PAPER.PDF

Elaine Garofoli: yes those are interesting

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: Patricia - too much information - continuous partial attention?

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: @pam recommends New Media HORIZON Report (annual)

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: I like having students reflect...

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Pam@  MERLOT

Eugenia McAllister 2: Horizon Report? As a new librarian I would like to read and follow this source

Elaine Garofoli: @ Jane. yes metacognition and using a blog tool

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: That was me... Found you - but can't fine Jane

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: Horizon Report 2012: http://www.nmc.org/publications/horizon-report-2012-higher-ed-edition

Ilene Frank: Horizon reports etc are at http://www.nmc.org/horizon-project

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: Elaine - yes!

Eugenia McAllister 2: Sorry, I see it

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: @Pam - recommend MERLOT - faculty development area  -  kudos to Ray Purdom!

Elaine Garofoli: it can be overwhelming for us tech folks also, never mind those who are just tuning in

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: http://facultydevelopment.merlot.org/

Ilene Frank: Saylor is actually creating courses!
 ------------------------------- (03/16/2012 15:20) -------------------------------
Pam Howe: Michael Wesch is another

Patricia Hauslein: I am also finding that the students who put together a project learn the content very well, however the students have told me they zone out as much as they do watching a lecture.

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: http://digitallearning.macfound.org/atf/cf/%7B7E45C7E0-A3E0-4B89-AC9C-E807E1B0AE4E%7D/JENKINS_WHITE_PAPER.PDF

Pam Howe: Michael Wesch is another

Patricia Hauslein: I am also finding that the students who put together a project learn the content very well, however the students have told me they zone out as much as they do watching a lecture.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: SECRET OBSERVATION:  What Jane actually does is spend lots of time iniitating "informal" conversations with lots of faculty individually in which she learns from them and in which she offers small suggestions

Elaine Garofoli: didn't Wesch recently come out with the realization that having his students using so much tech was not as beneficial as he originally thought?

Elaine Garofoli: oh no, I've got to go

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: bye Elaine  so glad to have you

Elaine Garofoli: thank you so much for the stimulating conversation

Pam Howe: bye elaine

James Lurvey: Thanks. Bye.

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: Thre are many, many initiatives moving to Open Educational Resources... and many, many ways to  engage students - it is a Tsunami!  But well worth navigating with our collective intelligence.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: I think we need a new FrLv session entirely about identity and anonymity - i'm hearing some new issues about these recently, including what Jane just said!

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: Thanks everyone who has stayed with us.  Enjoy your weekend if you have to leave.... (and even if you stay).
 ------------------------------- (03/16/2012 15:24) -------------------------------
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: I think these tools give us many tools for CREATING and moving towards applied knowledge - and OUTCOMES - all working at the highest levels of what we hope to achieve for learning.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: @Jane  "You can track and see what students have done"  - in levels of detail never before possible - which leads to some new philosophgical ethical legal tech issues!

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: @Patricia - yes, that can happen, particularly in the absence of a peer review of the sites.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: @Pam - likes simplicity of Khan's resources

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: An interesting dialogic alternative worth looking at is www.Algebra2go.com

Ilene Frank: Nice discussion of latest Michael Wesch comments about use of tech from Derek Bruff http://derekbruff.org/?p=1971

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: One Community College Math faculty's attemt to supplement his classes where students don't have tech at their disposal in class (and minimal out of class).  It's an interesting difference in the way you present some of this knowledge and make it more personable and interactive.

Pam Howe: Thanks for that link Ilene.

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: @ thanks Ilene.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Where's the connection between SoTL and neuroscience?  Where are findings about pedagogy at the level of coursese or classes?

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Can you recommend a couple authors or studies from SoTL?

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Start anywhere you like best!

Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: Teaching your first college class - Lieberg

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Linda Neilsen - Teaching at its Best

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: Laurie Richlin blueprint for learning
