There’s an App for That! Chat Transcript & Archive link from TLTGroup's Friday Live! #TLTGFrLv 20120309

Presenters:  Stephen Kaufman and Timothy Lombardo, Information Technology, Ashland University

Friday, March 9, 2012, 2:00 pm (ET)

Applications, or “apps,” can provide an amazing amount of flexibility and interaction for students. The ability for instructors to provide an additional way for students to engage with their content is revolutionizing education. In this session, presenters demonstrated apps that they have found helpful for students and faculty members alike. In addition, they demonstrated apps across multiple platforms. Read Text Chat [below] for links to Apps!

Suzie Roth: (14:11) free is good!!
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:11) "Free as in beer/pizza, not free as in puppy"
Sam Eneman, Univ. of North Carolina Charlotte: (14:11) not even virtual pizza?
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:14) Take a guess - what % of your professional colleagues NOW own a device that can use this kind of Apps?  e.g., iphones, Android phones, ipads....

 Traci Collins: (14:16) Thank you
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:16) I'm really pleased that the answer to the most downloaded app was not pornography!
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:16) Take a guess - what % of your professional colleagues AT YOUR OWN INSTITUTION NOW own a device that can use this kind of Apps?  e.g., iphones, Android phones, ipads....
Susan  Boyd: (14:16) I am imagining the pizza, so that's enough :-)
Linda Joffe: (14:17) I'm inagining the iPad! :)
Deb: (14:18) Can you provide a link to this survey & its results?
Chulapol Thanomsing: (14:18) I second the survey results
Linda Joffe: (14:19) But, how invasive is Google Chrome?
Ilene Frank: (14:19) Linda, are you asking about privacy issues?
 Linda Joffe: (14:19) Yes, Ilene.
Ilene Frank: (14:20) Here's some privacy info  - there are some settings that help http://tools.google.com/chrome/intl/en/privacy.html
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:21) REMINDER:  we'll include most refs, links mentioned, inclduing the slides and the digital recording at http://tlt.gs/tltswg
Linda Grisham: (14:21) What was the name of the app for special need students--the sound was garbled.
 Sue McDaniel: (14:21) ProLoQuo2Go
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:21) That will happen AFTER this session ends.  We can't figure out how to make the full recording available before the event happens... we're waiting for the App for that!
 Sue McDaniel: (14:21) I think
 Linda Joffe: (14:22) Thanks, Ilene.
Jane Ternes: (14:22) dig the vest
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:23) If you're ONLY using coffee, I'm really impressed!
Vickie: (14:23) he had a lot of chocolate today too!
 Steve Kaufman: (14:23) yay chocolate
Sam Eneman, Univ. of North Carolina Charlotte: (14:24) tried to login via Adobe's Connect app - Fail! :-(
Sam Eneman, Univ. of North Carolina Charlotte: (14:25) that's their iPad app ...
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:25) Within Louvre app, do we get permission to project the downloaded images within a class?  within a fee-based lecture live or online?
suehellman: (14:26) missed the title of this app?
 suehellman: (14:26) thanks
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:26) http://translate.google.com/
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:26) Google Translate
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:27) Next:  Molecules
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:27) [How did I know he was going to choose caffeine?]
Irina Ivliyeva, Missouri ST: (14:28) as a langiage instructor, i do not lik Google trans;ate. My students try to plug in  chunks of texts, and I immediately know  thy have chetaed. the app is fine for 2-3 word sequences - no more.
lorraine wochna, Ohio University: (14:28) this app w/ work with Android device?
Renee: (14:28) REally?  It must just be the energy of youth then...:)
lorraine wochna, Ohio University: (14:28) ok.
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:28) IOS AV adapter cable are relatively recent and need to be just right for your device and for the projecting device (incl  HDTV!)
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:28) Next:  GeoMaster
Ilene Frank: (14:28) Steve, I just found the terms and conditions of use of material on the Louvre web site  http://www.louvre.fr/en/legal-information-and-terms-use
Rhonda Ficek: (14:32) What was the app they showed just before this about population?
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:33) 7 Billion
 Ilene Frank: (14:33) Here's 7 Billion http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/7-billion/id473524096?mt=8
lorraine wochna, Ohio University: (14:33) if i don't have my ipad/iphone w/ me can I still look at the app?
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:33) All folks registered will have access to t o the archive.
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:33) Next: Smithsonian
lorraine wochna, Ohio University: (14:33) you know what i mean?  in case i wonder what it looks like?
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:33) right - remkinder  all links etc will be avail via http://tlt.gs/tltswg
Linda Joffe: (14:34) How much storage does a typical APP take up on a phone?
lorraine wochna, Ohio University: (14:34) i don't mean now, i just mean in general
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:35) Next: iBrainstorm
Paula Calahan: (14:36) ShowMe is another whiteboard app--free. :)
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:36) Next: Teacherpal
Ilene Frank: (14:36) Linda, I'm looking for "how much space does an average app take up" and I'm getting "it varies".  Games tend to take up more space.
Linda Joffe: (14:37) Thanks, Ilene.  I was referring to the specific apps noted in this meeting.
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:38) Most "recent" devices, amount of space for most apps is almost negligible.... be careful about "almost"
Ilene Frank: (14:39) When you look at the listing in the iTunes store for apps, they'll tell you how much space they take. Brainstorm says 3.6 MB
Linda Joffe: (14:39) Sounds like a LOT of time to expend to "enroll" students in a lot of classes.
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:39) http://teacherpal.net/
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:40) In what ways would use of TeacherPal  interact with Blackboard?
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:40) Here are other questions from chat:  Deb: Can you provide a link to this survey & its results?Chulapol Thanomsing: I second the survey resultsLinda Joffe: But, how invasive is Google Chrome?(Ilene Frank: Linda, are you asking about privacy issues? Linda Joffe: Yes, Ilene.)Linda Joffe: How much storage does a typical APP take up on a phone?lorraine wochna, Ohio University: if i don't have my ipad/iphone w/ me can I still look at the app?
E Park: (14:40) Life on Earth (Sample in iBook) = 970M, some new, media rich ibooks are tend to big in size.
suehellman: (14:40) this would be useful in K12 -- seating plans, notes about kids -- we keep that kind of information anyway
Linda Joffe: (14:41) But, we all use LMS's
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:42) We see everything again
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:43) ABOUT 15 MINS OF "REGULAR" TIME IN SESSION - THEN WE SWITCH INTO "AFTERTHOUGHTS"  AND YOU CAN CONTINUE ANYWAY!
Sue McDaniel: (14:43) This would be useful to share with students in a teacher education program ... when they're working with a school that doesn't use an LMS
 Steve Kaufman: (14:43) awesome
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:43) Now:  Android Apps
 Steve Kaufman: (14:43) ok
suehellman: (14:43) @Linda -- can get Google Chrome portable version (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable) and it loads from a thumb drive rather than being your computer's browser
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:43) can't really see that
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:43) You guys do NOT need to apologize for anything!  I'm really impressed that so much of this is working so well - and you're providing so much useful info
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:44) Android Market Search:  by Educational Apps (can search free).  Ex: Startchart
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:44) Google Skymaps
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:44) Yes we lost you again.
richard: (14:44) it is a continuing weakness that the app concept is atomized which is fine for an individual user but doesn't work so well in a framework  where you need to do multiple things. Is there an emerging trend toward integration in apps?
richard: (14:45) I find that it is getting tedious to go to all of my apps to extract the content that is specific to that app, then go to the next and the next
richard: (14:46) in the same way that RSS saved us from having to go to interesting sites one-by-one, it would be nice to have a similar concept in appage.
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:46) Yes we can see it fine
 Vickie: (14:46) good
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:47) Good points Richard.
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:47) Google chrome is a browser - avail free and working for most computer systems - works like MS Internet Explorer, Firefox
Renee: (14:47) Yes, so many apps are more designed for individual use, for supplemental instruction, studying after hours, etc.  I am interested in teaching in the classroom not just showing appss. For example, would a  faculty member open up the Lourve app and have students pick a particuplar   paiting and  discuss  it?
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:48) nice idea, renee
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:48) Everyone:  I have been keeping your questions off to the side, we will try and get to them, but we're letting them share and get through their apps - so bear with us... and be ready to ask again.
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:49) So, you can use these "Google Chrome Apps" wherever you are using the Google Chrom Browser - without needing to own a smart phone etc.
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:49) Hey, careful about shwoing the human body in this public session!
richard: (14:49) direct channel to individual users is an existential problem for libraries, and apps are a part of it
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:50) I wonder if we're subject to the MPAA rating system?
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:51) I so wish my orthopedist had this in his office!
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:51) @ Rene- anything you can think of, you can link out to.  point them to the app (in your LMS... wherever) and pose a challenge/assignment/project for them to undertake.  It is just a nice, concise starting point with specific features that are available for everyone.
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:51) Amazing!
 Renee: (14:51) app name?
 suehellman: (14:51) Biodigital Human?
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:51) Google Chrome: Biodigital Human
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:51) Next: Planetarium
Tod Colegrove: (14:53) what's the rocket ship app?
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:54) Google Books - Shop Books - Top Free
Ilene Frank: (14:54) Guys, do you need a Google account to use Google Play?
Flavio Argueta: (14:55) can that get downloaded to kindle?
Maureen Babb: (14:55) What format are those books in?  Can they be downloaded into e-readers in general?
Gwen Rodgers SNU: (14:55) You can use the "Print to Kindle" once on your computer - shows up in docs
Ilene Frank: (14:55) Flavio, I found some info on downloading Google Play stuff to the Kindle Fire, but I haven't tried it yet.
Ilene Frank: (14:56) Flavio, try this YouTube video   for using Play on the Kindle Fire.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TcQPFHd9G4
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:56) start with the need, not the app
Mark Howell: (14:56) How expensive is it to design a custom app
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:56) Searching Key terms in apps is an easy way to find them.
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:57) review the reviews
 Renee: (14:57) Good point.
Flavio Argueta: (14:57) reviews are tiny, but helpful
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (14:58) The reviews are generally ordered in terms of app strengths (ratings)... so you can read top reviews, and lowest rated reviews (that helps minimize how many)... but it is good to read those.
Chulapol Thanomsing: (14:58) How would we make sure that the app would benefit all studnets, not just some students who have the device?
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:58) ADVICE:   pick a platform to begin (free, easy Google Chrome);  pick a task;  search for an app
suehellman: (14:58) perhaps think of a classroom use for an app that person already uses so he/she is familiar with the tech and can think of a new application for it in class?
 Renee: (14:58) hehehe
Paula Calahan: (14:59) who doesn't want to be techno-hip?
Renee: (14:59) many people I know

Renee: (15:06) Good ideas. So, one doesn't have to be tied down to a particular device and you can use Google Chrome from any computer like in a smart classroom. Right?
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:06) Push & hold, tap on the apps, then turn them off when you are done with them (red button top left).
David McCurry, TLT Group: (15:06) My son introduced me to the "app killer" app. Very useful in my Droid phone.

Marian Colello: (15:09) I'm not that dexterous Steve!
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:10) Here are the questions again:
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:10) Deb: Can you provide a link to this survey & its results?Chulapol Thanomsing: I second the survey resultsLinda Joffe: But, how invasive is Google Chrome?(Ilene Frank: Linda, are you asking about privacy issues? Linda Joffe: Yes, Ilene.)Linda Joffe: How much storage does a typical APP take up on a phone?lorraine wochna, Ohio University: if i don't have my ipad/iphone w/ me can I still look at the app?richard: it is a continuing weakness that the app concept is atomized which is fine for an individual user but doesn't work so well in a framework  where you need to do multiple things. Is there an emerging trend toward integration in apps?Ilene Frank: Guys, do you need a Google account to use Google Play?  Flavio Argueta: can that get downloaded to kindle?Chulapol Thanomsing: How would we make sure that the app would benefit all studnets, not just some students who have the device?

suehellman: (15:15) Once have downloaded apps through Google Chrome are they then stand alone?
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (15:16) richard: it is a continuing weakness that the app concept is atomized which is fine for an individual user but doesn't work so well in a framework  where you need to do multiple things. Is there an emerging trend toward integration in apps?Ilene Frank: Guys, do you need a Google account to use Google Play?
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:16) Is there an emerging trend toward integration in apps?
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:17) (is richard's question)
suehellman: (15:17) To clarify -- one you have an app through Google Chrome, can it be used without connecting to the internet?
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (15:17) I am beginning to REALLY like Evernote!
 Steve Kaufman: (15:17) dropbox.com
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:17) Full question from richard:  richard: it is a continuing weakness that the app concept is atomized which is fine for an individual user but doesn't work so well in a framework  where you need to do multiple things. Is there an emerging trend toward integration in apps?
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (15:18) How is dropbox better than iCloud - or Google cloud service?
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:18) www.dropbox.com  - it is fantastic.
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:18) Free... and grows  (me too Steve... so watch out).
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (15:18) Can you search for/within your own files on Dropbox?
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:19) Yes you can Steve... just like your file management.
Irina Ivliyeva, Missouri ST: (15:19) thnak you everybody! see you next friday!
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:19) Thanks Irina
Renee: (15:20) So if a faculty makes a large movie and Blackboard LMS can't hold it, the faculty can put it on Dropbox and make it public, right?
 Renee: (15:20) YEAH!!!!
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:21) Dropbox synchs very easily on all your computers, ipad & phone, etc.
Flavio Argueta: (15:21) just remember copyright issues?
 Renee: (15:21) GREAT!!!!!!!!!
Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: (15:21) hour-long podcasts?
Flavio Argueta: (15:21) that would be a great webinar on copyright from both of you.
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:22) Dropbox is just like a folder/file sharing app.
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:23) Share the public link through Twitter... or facebook... or Bb/LMS... or whatever social sharing.
Renee: (15:23) You guys have so much energy.  Great work!
Flavio Argueta: (15:24) its the coffee....
suehellman: (15:24) My apps list from a previous prod session -- http://www.scoop.it/t/ceet-moodle-meet-reources-oct-2011-mlearning?tag=apps
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (15:24) Terrrific!  you're saying that faculty aren't nerds!
Renee: (15:24) Glad you guys aren't like the Saturday Night Live Tech guys!
Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: (15:25) I do instructional tech support - I think that for our faculty - it's time more than anything else
Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: (15:25) lack of time
Ilene Frank: (15:25) I can't be sure that everyone in my courses will have access to a mobile device.
Roberta (Robin) Sullivan, University at Buffalo: (15:25) Not all students would have equal access since all students don't have smart pones or iPads
Renee: (15:25) lack of time and they have always done things the same way and don't have time to learn anything new.
Paula Calahan: (15:26) I'm an instructional designer--I wanted to see what you share with faculty. Great job! Most are just reluctant to learn something new--think it will be time intensive. :)
Barbara Draude: (15:26) I agree that tiem is the biggest issue - but there is a need for increasing awareness - often faculty do not know the possiblities
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:26) Access to app devices... time for them to download the specific app (and then to access it).
 Renee: (15:26) Roberta good point.
Renee: (15:26) We still have a lot of have nots.
Roberta (Robin) Sullivan, University at Buffalo: (15:26) Thanks - I didn't know about the Chrome option until you mentioned it today.
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (15:26) avoid "all show - no go"
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:27) Provided you have Chrome on your image in your labs (we would have to work on that - as we don't have this as a browser option).
Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: (15:27) Bonnie - very good point.
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:28) Can you 'image' the Google Chrome so that the apps are always available to you no matter where you are?
Mou Chakraborty: (15:28) actually just started showing Apps in class- showed dropbox, GoodReader, and some medical ones
Renee: (15:28) Chrome opens it up for all.
Flavio Argueta: (15:28) I would think that you would need to indicate which app is need on the syllabus, just as indicating a book.
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:28) In other words, where do keep a collection/library of the apps?
suehellman: (15:28) @Bonnie -- you can get Google Chrome Portable and run from a thumb drive (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable). It doesn't have to be installed on a computer.
suehellman: (15:28) The portable version travels with the user.
Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: (15:29) @Sue - very good to know about
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:29) I know.. it's crazy (yep - IT battle)... even though Firefox is better, they currently only have IE.
 Renee: (15:29) suhellman- good ideas
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:29) right... iGoogle in Chrome.
Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group: (15:29) How to I transfer these to students easily?
suehellman: (15:29) Same with Firefos -- look for FF portable at http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
Jane Harris, UNC Greensboro: (15:31) This has been great guys!
suehellman: (15:32) Extermal drives for Idevices at http://www.hypershop.com/HyperDrive-s/119.htm
